Hi all,
Kindra is improving everyday! She is getting stronger and becoming herself again slowly but surely. She still sleeps quite a bit through the day but she is more alert and vocal when she is awake. Amy was here last week to help with Kindra and Mark's daily life. She is pregnant with her second child so she had no problem keeping Kindra on a good eating schedule! Amy kept herself and started Kindra on an 'eat every two hours' food cycle. She also started Kindra exercising again with doing stairs... no, Amy is not that cruel to make Kindra sprint up and down the stairs just yet, but I can imagine her with a whistle in her mouth yelling 'Faster! Faster!'... What I mean by stairs is they started walking up and down the condo stairs from M&K's third floor condo.
Kindra and Mark had a nice quiet weekend and when I saw her last night she looked refreshed and happier than I had seen her in a while. That is, until she got the call from her nurse asking her to go to the ER for a blood transfusion. Her hemoglobin count was low, plus her potassium number was below average. Potassium levels can effect the heart and this was the number with the biggest concern. She was so comfortable, though, sitting on the couch that she defied the nurse and the doctor, whom she never met nor was familiar with her case, and stayed put. We gave her a banana and a protein drink that is high in potassium and made the executive, if not professionally educated, decision to forgo the ER visit and wait until morning to go to the cancer center for a blood transfusion.
Marisa, another friend from AZ, came in last night to help out this week. Chicago was nice enough to have a freeze over night and welcome Mari with temperatures below comfortable to the most weathered Chicagoans. She drove Kindra to the cancer center, where they are presently. Kindra will receive two pints of blood today.
Perhaps it was partly the medicine, but I would like to think she made this great improvement from all the positive thoughts her friends and family are sending her! Keep it up!
Much love,
Marnie
