Off to Physical Therapy

Hi Family and Friends,

I have been spending the last week recovering and doing my best to manage the pain and discomfort left from my surgery. The Vicodin is certainly helping me along! It has only been 3 weeks (well, tomorrow it will be) so I am doing my best to be patient with the recovery although it is my biggest challenge. I consider myself a patient person and this has been the most intense test of my patience so far in my life. I am trying to keep in perspective that it takes one day at a time even if the improvement is very small each day.

Yesterday, I met with a doctor from the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago that is based at my hospital. I met with him to discuss the lymph drainage in my abdomen and to enroll in the lymphedema program. The program includes physical therapy and massage to help my abdomen to drain and distribute the lymph fluid more effectively. The doctor was very kind and had explained to me that he believes the distention (bloating) is most likely temporary and a result of the surgery. He was very positive about the physical therapy being able to help the drainage and said that since we were starting this early, it is a good sign. One of the positive things is that my legs are not swollen, there is no numbness in them and the bloating in my hips has subsided. My first appointment with the physical therapist is tomorrow morning. I will let you all know how it goes.

Until then, I am trying to stay active in and out of the house and enjoying all of the Olympic Games action on TV. I love the gymnastics, swimming, beach volleyball and track and field. :-)

Love, Hugs and Good Health!

Hi sweet friend. You are truly one of the most patient people I know. You will make it through this period and come out stronger on the other side. I'm so happy you have the Olympics to watch and enjoy while you are home. I hope the first physical therapy today went well. Love you.

Hi Kins...That's great to hear that the doc thinks it's temporary and again you are doing everything you can to heal better and faster. If I could trade places with you I would. Unfortunately, I will have to settle for continuing to admire your patience and strength. Feel free to keep us all up to date on the Olympics! I haven't been able to tune in as much as I've wanted to and I always love hearing what you have to share. Big hugs, Jami
